Yes, I can open other excel files on my mac. When I say can't open I mean that I CAN'T OPEN THE FILE IN EXCEL. I get a message saying that I can either see it was read only or notify, but this only happens on a desktop mac, when I try to open it on my macbook I get no message. If a spreadsheet is dimmed and can't be selected, it means the spreadsheet can't be opened by Numbers. 1. It could come from the fact that you have formatted your external drive on the Mac, in a file system Windows can't read or write (HFS+ comes to mind).
2. Check the MS site for a program to convert.DOCX,.XLTX files back to the older.DOC,.XLT file format. The Windows version is called Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack. Not sure if they released a version for Mac. EDIT: That should of read XLSX and XLS. Not XLTX and XLT, although those extension are for Templates.
3. I also have Excel 2011 for Mac installed. I cannot open any Excel file whether it was created on Mac or PC. It opens in Numbers then I have to save it as an Excel file. That doesn't seem right to me. When I try to open it I get a window for every Excel file on my computer with a message that it can't be opened.

BUT only with MSWord files . all of my xlsx files won't open & when I try to open them by opening the spreadsheet, it won't even list the excel files as options to open .

Please help!!! As a Mac user I absolutely HATE numbers/pages/etc. & want my happy awesome Libreoffice back!!!
